This special youth program was developed aimed at providing a platform for local Aboriginal youth to tell their stories through the medium of digital stop motion animation. Working collaboratively in small production teams, over twenty students developed, directed, and produced their own projects, supported by professional animators providing technical guidance, to produce a final stop-motion animation short film. Over a period of seven weeks, students attended a weekly 2-hour session where they were introduced to digital stop-motion animation including storyboarding, character development, production, and videography through to basic post-production techniques.

The program was led by an experienced animator, Daniel Elliott, and young emerging animator, Sophie Baldwin with, special guest animator mentor Tim Adlide, and Northern Rivers Community Gallery’s Creative Producer, Andrew McDonald, overseeing the full program delivery. The program concluded with a special Red Carpet Screening Event showcasing all five final short films for the participants and their friends and family at Ballina Fair Cinemas on Tuesday 15 June 2021.

The Ignite Youth Animator program was made possible through funding from the NSW Government and is produced by NRCG in partnership with Bunjum Aboriginal Corporation – Goori Youth Group, and Southern Cross School Distance Education (DE) Programs in Ballina.

Northern Rivers Community Gallery and the artists acknowledge that we are here on the land of the Bundjalung people, traditional owners of this land on which we live and work.
