Photography: March 2025
March this year was nothing if not varied, even beyond the commercial projects. From relaxing walks around the town of Armidale to holiday snapshots from Newcastle and events in Tenterfield and Uralla, there was no shortage of activity this month.

I tagged along for Simon Scott Photo's NERAM Culture Club Open Studio program. It wasn't really the point of the event, but I find that small gatherings like this work well as networking opportunities. Plus, I was planning on going out to take street photos anyway. There's always more to learn by watching others and seeing their process.
It was a fun time with some familiar, friendly faces as well as some new ones, and I even managed to snag a few photos that aren't half bad.

I had the chance to go on a relaxing little trip to Newcastle, and by little trip I mean holiday. This year when it comes to photography on holidays I have only one very specific rule, take my Canon 200D (the first digital camera I ever owned) and it's classic Canon 18-55mm kit lens, maybe the most boring lens ever made, its got zero sauce to its captures. The last thing I want to be doing when I am trying to take a break from work is taking photos like im working. Set that baby to auto and shoot without thinking.
Your not going to find any portfolio shots over the next few posts, just the reminder that when your on holidays all that really matters is living in the moment and keeping things loose.
This first little collection is from the drive down, I can't believe Newcastle has a bowls club thats mascot and logo is a mosquito? What the hell is that about?

The first real day of holidays in Newcastle (and I think the day I got the best photos, conditions were pretty great for the way I like to work). Salt sprayed beaches and sunsets, hard to go wrong.
First up was a trip to Red Head Beach so the dogs could go for a run.
This was followed by a trip to Lake Maquarie for some night time kayaking, unfortunately I couldn’t take my camera out on the water (not that I would have got any good shots in the dark anyway I suppose), but I did manage to capture some nice shots of the sun setting.

The final day of holidays in Newcastle was relatively chill, it started with a morning swimming with sharks and stingrays which, you can probably work out why I have no photos for, but that was followed with a trip to another beach with the dogs, this time Hams Beach.

Sometimes its nice to get back to basics, and for me thats getting back into my super market trolley photography project from last year which I kind of fell off of as the year went on, maybe it just got too depressing, I can’t remember. In the time since a new supermarket has opened in town pushing the number of trolleys laying around from offensive to downright absurd. These photos were all taken on one street accross 4 blocks, with a policy of not taking photos of trolleys that are within a 20m radius of a shopping center or super market, my often fruitfull exploration of side streets didn’t really lead to anything this time (which is good technically?) but I did find a cat watching me from a drive way. This year for the project I am going to strick to strictly black and white and really try to focus more on interesting compositions, maybe even try to treat it like wildlife photography, trolleys are just animals trying to live their best life right?

Today, it was back up to Tenterfield for Quoll Headquarters for an open day—not for work this time, but for pleasure. That didn't mean I couldn't bring my camera, though. Unfortunately, the crowds of people scared away most of the wildlife—fair enough, given that they are wild animals—but there was no shortage of absolute characters at the event. It was great to catch up with so many familiar faces again.

Rounding out the month, we headed out to the second day of Seasons of New England. Despite the previous day's rather savage weather, people still showed up in droves. While I didn't get any photos at the event that I felt were particularly good, I did enjoy a rather delicious trout pie and Japanese rice lager. Not to mention, I had the chance to catch up with some good friends, so it ended up being a good morning all the same.
